The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has criticised the Federal Government’s reported plan to reintegrate nearly 800 repentant terrorists into communities across the country, warning that the move could undermine the fight against insurgency and expose already affected communities to further danger.

In a statement issued by its National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, the party argued that the proposal raises serious concerns about justice, national security, and the government’s capacity to protect citizens. It also accused the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu of lacking clarity and firmness in addressing terrorism.

The reported reintegration plan is part of ongoing deradicalisation and rehabilitation efforts for former insurgents, a policy that has continued to generate debate over the balance between justice and reconciliation.

The ADC expressed concern over what it described as the government’s soft approach to the issue, including the use of conciliatory language in referring to former insurgents. It warned that such framing risks minimising the severity of terrorism and blurring accountability.

“Terrorism is not a family dispute. It is a sustained and organised campaign of violence against the Nigerian state and its people,” the party said, stressing that leniency without accountability amounts to weakness rather than compassion.

The opposition party also faulted what it described as inconsistencies in the government’s security strategy, arguing that there is insufficient transparency around who has been investigated, prosecuted, or cleared for reintegration.

It further warned that the absence of clear safeguards could make the policy appear like “confusion dressed up as strategy,” potentially eroding public trust and worsening the plight of victims.

According to the ADC, national security demands clarity, accountability, and a victim-centred approach, insisting that reintegration without justice undermines both reconciliation and the broader fight against terrorism.
