Suspected thugs on Monday attacked the Chairman of Owo Local Government Area in Ondo State, Tope Omolayo, stripping him naked at the council secretariat in Owo shortly after he resumed office following a six-month suspension.

Omolayo had been suspended by members of the local government legislative assembly over allegations that he insulted Ajibade Ogunoye in a viral audio recording.

The recording sparked public outrage, after which Omolayo issued an apology admitting wrongdoing and expressing remorse. However, the palace authority reportedly rejected the apology, and in November 2025, declared him persona non grata in the Owo Kingdom.

Eyewitnesses said the violence broke out immediately after Omolayo arrived at the council secretariat, when suspected hoodlums allegedly loyal to the palace confronted him.

The attackers reportedly beat him, tore off his clothing, and fired gunshots into the air, causing panic among workers and residents who fled the area.

One witness described the scene as chaotic, noting that the situation escalated quickly as shots were fired and people scattered in fear.

Omolayo, who survived the assault, identified some of the attackers as individuals allegedly linked to the palace, naming several, including Kunle Odide and others known by aliases such as Eko, Gentle, Festus, Akeem, Goldberg, and Lastangle.

In response, the spokesperson for the Ondo State Police Command, Jimoh Abayomi, confirmed that the Commissioner of Police, Adebowale Lawal, had deployed security operatives to the scene.

He said the swift intervention restored calm and normalcy in the area.
