Abdulazeez Adediran, popularly known as Jandor and a former Lagos State PDP governorship candidate, has refuted reports suggesting that President Bola Tinubu has endorsed Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat as the preferred APC candidate for the 2027 Lagos governorship race.

He stated that there has been no presidential endorsement, nor has Hamzat officially declared any intention to run for the position.

Jandor, who is now an APC aspirant for the same position, made the statement during Monday’s edition of Channels Television’s Politics Today, where he rejected the increasing narrative that the contest had already been decided in favour of Hamzat.

On Hamzat’s candidacy, Jandor stated that the deputy governor has not personally confirmed any intention to run, noting that he is qualified and has over 20 years of experience in governance.

He also dismissed speculation of a presidential endorsement, insisting that any such development would be formally communicated to all aspirants. According to him, no endorsement has been made by the President.

Jandor further explained that the APC has not indicated any plan for a consensus candidate, maintaining that the current arrangement favours direct primaries. He added that the party would comply with whatever process is eventually adopted.

He disclosed that during a personal meeting with President Tinubu, he received neither discouragement nor assurance regarding the party ticket, a situation he said strengthened his resolve to stay in the race.

Defending his early declaration, Jandor described it as a show of confidence, likening his political ambition to that of the President.

“Of course, because if you don’t have confidence in yourself, no one else will. When the President was contesting for the ticket, he openly declared his intention to run,” he said.

Speaking on opposition politics in Lagos, Jandor said that the consolidation of political power under the APC has largely weakened rival parties in the state.

However, he reaffirmed his commitment to the party’s final decision, stating that he would support whoever emerges as the APC candidate if he does not secure the ticket.

The contest for the 2027 Lagos governorship is already intensifying as Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu approaches the end of his second term.

Those reportedly interested in the race include Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, former Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, Senator Tokunbo Abiru, presidential aide Hakeem Muri-Okunola, Chief of Staff to the President Femi Gbajabiamila, and Minister of Education Tunji Alausa.
