The Federal Government has released ₦11.8 billion to 6,842 academic and non-academic staff in Nigerian tertiary institutions.
The beneficiaries come from 141 institutions—including federal universities, polytechnics, and colleges of education—based on data published by the Federal Ministry of Education and obtained by our correspondent.
The figures show that the loans were issued through the Tertiary Institutions Staff Support Fund, with 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions verified so far.
Federal university staff account for the largest share of applicants at 59 per cent, followed by polytechnic staff at 23 per cent and colleges of education at 18 per cent.
The TISSF, introduced in August 2025, is a programme funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and TETFund, aimed at improving the welfare, career growth, and financial stability of staff in Nigeria’s tertiary institutions. It offers interest-free loans of up to ₦10 million to eligible academic and non-academic staff.
In addition, under the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative, 240 e-tricycles have reportedly been distributed across 12 institutions.
Key details from the ministry’s website highlight that loans of up to ₦10 million are available at zero interest, with ₦11.8 billion already disbursed to 6,842 beneficiaries from 141 institutions. It also notes that 34,000 applicants from 219 institutions have been verified, with federal universities accounting for 59 per cent of applicants, polytechnics 23 per cent, and colleges of education 18 per cent. Eligibility requires a minimum of five years remaining before retirement.
Other programmes under the initiative include the EduRevamp Teacher Platform, a digital training system introduced earlier this year to enhance teachers’ skills, and the School Safety Portal, developed in partnership with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps to strengthen school security management.
According to the ministry, the EduRevamp platform—launched at the first National Teacher Summit in January 2026—has attracted 37,000 registered users, with 18,000 teachers fully enrolled in its training modules.
