The Deputy Spokesperson of the House of Representatives, Philip Agbese, on Wednesday threw his weight behind the newly appointed Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, expressing confidence in his capacity to address ongoing delays in the execution of 2025 capital projects and restore stability to Nigeria’s fiscal system.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Agbese noted that his position comes amid rising concerns over the sluggish pace of budget implementation—a recurring issue that has slowed infrastructure development and weakened public trust in government spending cycles.

He observed that capital projects, widely regarded as critical drivers of economic growth, have long been hampered by late fund releases, revenue gaps, and bureaucratic inefficiencies.

According to the lawmaker, Oyedele’s appointment by President Bola Tinubu signals a clear intention by the administration to instill discipline and improve efficiency within the country’s economic management framework.

Agbese said, “The current delays in capital project execution should not be misconstrued as systemic failure. What is evident is that the President has taken decisive steps to strengthen the economic management team. With Taiwo Oyedele now in place, Nigerians can be confident that the economy is in capable hands.”

He described Oyedele as a seasoned expert in fiscal policy, with extensive experience in tax reform, public finance, and economic advisory, adding that such expertise positions him well to tackle long-standing structural challenges in budget implementation.

“What sets the new minister apart is not only his technical skill but also his deep understanding of Nigeria’s fiscal structure. His years of work in tax policy, revenue optimisation, and economic reforms make him well-suited for this critical moment,” Agbese stated.

Providing further insight, the lawmaker recalled Oyedele’s role as head of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, where he contributed to developing frameworks aimed at boosting revenue and aligning fiscal policies with national development goals—an area that has posed challenges for previous administrations.

“Oyedele has consistently demonstrated intellectual depth and the ability to analyse complex economic issues while delivering practical, results-oriented solutions. This is a strategic appointment based on competence, not trial and error,” he added.

Agbese also highlighted the minister’s experience across both public and private sectors, noting that such exposure offers a well-rounded perspective needed to navigate Nigeria’s current economic challenges, including revenue shortfalls, inflation, and infrastructure deficits.

He stressed that the finance ministry’s immediate priority should be ensuring timely release and effective utilisation of allocated funds so that capital projects translate into tangible benefits across key sectors.

The lawmaker reaffirmed the National Assembly’s commitment to providing legislative backing and strengthening oversight to ensure that reforms within the finance ministry produce measurable outcomes.

“At this stage, Nigerians expect results, not rhetoric. The minister understands the urgency of improving capital releases and ensuring that appropriated funds deliver real development outcomes,” he said.

“As a parliament, we will collaborate closely with the executive to put in place the necessary frameworks for effective budget implementation. We are confident that under Mr Oyedele’s leadership, the national budget will be repositioned to meet the expectations of Nigerians.”

Agbese further expressed optimism that enhanced coordination between the executive and legislature, clearer policy direction, and sustained institutional support would accelerate capital project execution in the coming months, ultimately strengthening fiscal credibility and overall economic governance.
