Real Madrid midfielder Federico Valverde was reportedly treated in hospital after a clash with team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni following a training session on Thursday, according to several Spanish media outlets.

The Uruguay international, who was accompanied to a hospital facility near the club’s Valdebebas training complex by Madrid coach Alvaro Arbeloa, reportedly required stitches to treat a facial wound.

Reports indicated that the two players had an argument during Wednesday’s training session, which allegedly continued on Thursday during and after training.

Spanish newspaper Marca, which first reported the incident, stated that Valverde’s injury was caused unintentionally and not directly by a punch from Tchouameni.

Neither Real Madrid nor the representatives of the two players commented on the incident when contacted by AFP.

Spanish media further claimed that Valverde refused to shake Tchouameni’s hand and later fouled him during Thursday’s training session, with the pair reportedly clashing again in the dressing room where the injury occurred.

Tensions are reportedly high at the club as Los Blancos face the possibility of ending a second consecutive season without a major trophy.

Real Madrid will visit rivals FC Barcelona in a La Liga Clasico on Sunday, with the Catalan side sitting 11 points clear at the top of the table and needing only to avoid defeat to secure back-to-back league titles.
