The United States Central Command (CENTCOM) says its forces fired on and disabled an Iranian-flagged tanker around 9 a.m. ET on Wednesday in the Gulf of Oman.
In a press release, CENTCOM stated that the empty vessel was attempting to sail to an Iranian port despite repeated warnings.
According to the statement, US Central Command forces observed the tanker M/T Hasna moving through international waters en route to Iran. American forces reportedly issued several warnings and informed the vessel that it was violating the U.S. blockade.
CENTCOM added that the shots struck the tanker’s rudder, leaving it unable to move.
The command also noted that this is not the first incident involving vessels trying to bypass the blockade on Iranian ports.
It further stated that the blockade remains fully in effect and that its forces continue to act “deliberately and professionally” to enforce compliance.
