VIDEO: US COMMENTATOR CALLS FOR ACTION OVER ALLEGED ATTACKS ON CHRISTIANS IN NIGERIA

Read Time:1 Minute, 21 Second

A United States commentator has raised concerns over recent violence in Nigeria’s Middle Belt region, alleging that Christian communities have been targeted in a series of deadly attacks, and calling for stronger international intervention.

In a statement reflecting on a previous visit to Nigeria, the commentator contrasted what he described as a swift Nigerian response to a coup-related incident in Benin with what he called a lack of decisive action in addressing insecurity within Nigeria itself.

He referenced recent violent incidents in Plateau State, claiming that Christians who were gathered for a mass burial following earlier attacks were themselves killed in what he described as a brutal assault by armed groups.

The commentator alleged that radical elements were responsible for the attacks and accused Nigerian authorities of failing to act on early warnings of impending violence, claiming that this has contributed to continued insecurity in affected communities.

He further described the situation as a “Christian genocide” in the Middle Belt region, a characterisation that remains highly contentious and is not independently verified.

Calling for international attention, he urged the United States government to take stronger action to support civilians affected by the violence. He also referenced the Trump administration’s counterterrorism strategy, noting its reported emphasis on protecting religious minorities, including Christians in Nigeria.

The Nigerian government has consistently maintained that it is working to address insecurity across the country, including in Plateau State and other regions affected by communal violence and armed group activity.
