Prominent activist Aisha Yesufu has resigned from the African Democratic Congress and joined the Nigeria Democratic Congress ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Yesufu also announced her intention to contest for the Federal Capital Territory senatorial seat under the platform of the NDC.
She disclosed this in a statement posted on her X handle on Wednesday, attributing her decision to what she described as a deeper understanding of Nigeria’s political future and her continued alignment with the political direction of Peter Obi.
“The next couple of days will define the future of this nation. This deeper understanding is why I resigned from the ADC to join the NDC as I follow the leadership of HE Peter Obi, who today embodies the hope and aspiration of a Nigeria that works,” she wrote.
According to Yesufu, her initial support for Obi influenced her earlier decision to join the ADC, adding that her move to the NDC was a continuation of that commitment.
“When I give my word, I keep it. My decision to support HE Peter Obi first led me to the ADC. To continue to honour the promise I am joining the NDC,” she stated.
She further declared that her role in the NDC would go beyond party membership, confirming her ambition to represent the FCT in the Senate.
“This time I am joining the NDC not just as a member but as one running for the FCT Senatorial seat,” she added.
The activist said she completed all responsibilities within the ADC before her departure, describing the transition as smooth and respectful.
She also expressed appreciation to members of the party, noting that she had served in several capacities, including as sub-committee chair, deputy committee chair and secretary at different levels.
The development comes amid ongoing political realignments within the opposition camp following the recent defection of Peter Obi and former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to the NDC.
