The Kwara State Government, in partnership with United Nations Children’s Fund, has distributed relief materials to victims of insecurity currently residing at the Internally Displaced Persons camp in Yikpata, Edu Local Government Area.

The supplies, which included Water, Sanitation and Hygiene materials alongside other relief items, were delivered to the camp authorities for onward distribution to displaced residents sheltering at the facility.

This was disclosed in a statement issued on Friday by Afolabi Temple, spokesperson for the Kwara State Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency, and made available to journalists in Ilorin.

Officials of RUWASSA formally handed over the materials to the camp commandant, Umar Adamu.

During the presentation, the General Manager of RUWASSA, Olorunfemi Oladipo, represented by the Head of Sanitation and Hygiene Department, Abdulazeez Rufai, praised the state government and UNICEF for supporting vulnerable residents displaced by insecurity.

He noted that the intervention reflected the strong partnership between the Kwara State Government and UNICEF in addressing the humanitarian needs of affected communities.

“We sincerely appreciate the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for their prompt response and dedication to the welfare of displaced persons at the Yikpata camp,” he said.

According to him, the assistance would help improve hygiene standards, promote healthy living conditions and provide relief for families facing difficult situations.

Oladipo also assured camp residents that the government and its development partners would continue supporting them while efforts to restore peace and normalcy in their communities continued.

He added that RUWASSA would intensify hygiene education and sanitation activities within the camp to help prevent disease outbreaks and maintain a healthy environment.

“Good hygiene practices and access to sanitation facilities are essential in humanitarian situations,” he stated, urging residents to make proper use of the distributed materials.

Receiving the supplies on behalf of the camp, Captain Adamu thanked the Kwara State Government and UNICEF for what he described as a timely intervention and commended the government’s commitment to displaced and vulnerable citizens.

He assured that the items would be shared fairly among all beneficiaries in the camp.

Also speaking, the representative of the displaced persons, Bello Abubakar, popularly known as the camp teacher, expressed appreciation to the state government and UNICEF for supporting displaced families.

Abubakar said the intervention had renewed hope among camp residents, particularly women and children struggling with the effects of displacement.

The support initiative is part of ongoing humanitarian efforts by the Kwara State Government, UNICEF and other development partners aimed at improving living conditions for internally displaced persons across affected communities in the state.

The Yikpata camp currently shelters more than 1,000 displaced persons, including around 800 children, 500 women and 165 men.
