The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Joash Amupitan, has praised members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), describing them as the most dedicated, educated, and patriotic personnel used for election duties. He said their involvement at polling units has helped build a strong sense of neutrality and public confidence in the electoral process.
He made the remarks on Monday in Abuja during a courtesy visit to the INEC headquarters by the Director-General of the NYSC, O.O. Nafiu.
Amupitan reaffirmed INEC’s commitment to working closely with the NYSC and security agencies to ensure strict safety measures for Corps members deployed for elections.
He also noted that the commission is improving insurance and welfare packages in recognition of the risks associated with their role.
Looking ahead to the 2027 general elections scheduled for January 16 and February 6, he emphasized the need for full mobilisation and preparedness of NYSC members, describing them as essential to a credible electoral process.
According to him, INEC will require 707,384 Corps Members for the Presidential and National Assembly elections, and the same number for the Governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections, bringing the total to 1,414,768.
He added that in many states, Corps members account for up to 90 percent of Registration Area Officers and Presiding Officers, helping to manage voting and safeguard electoral integrity across 176,846 polling units, including difficult terrains.
Amupitan also commended their performance during the Anambra governorship election and FCT Area Council polls, noting that their digital competence ensured smooth use of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS).
He further assured that INEC is ready to work with the NYSC on training and mobilising ad hoc staff for the 2026 off-cycle elections and the 2027 general polls.
He concluded that achieving a transparent, efficient, and peaceful election would depend on strong collaboration and shared responsibility among stakeholders, including the NYSC.
