UPDATE: 14 BODIES FOUND IN HAITI CAPITAL SUBURB AMID GANG VIOLENCE
Following an attack by gang members who have been ravaging the nation for weeks, fourteen dead were discovered on Monday in a suburb of Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti, according to an AFP correspondent.
Although locals told AFP they were unaware of the specifics surrounding the fatalities, they claimed that since early Monday, armed bandits had been attacking the wealthy Petion-Ville district.
According to witnesses, local residences, a petrol station, and a bank were all targeted by gang members.
Well-armed militants have been invading Haiti for the past two weeks, claiming they want to overthrow Prime Minister Ariel Henry.
Under pressure from the United States and the other Caribbean countries, Henry finally agreed to resign last week in order to facilitate the creation of an interim government.
The children’s organisation of the United Nations, UNICEF, gave a dismal assessment of the situation in Haiti on Sunday, stating that it was “almost like a scene out of ‘Mad Max,'” and cautioning that people were suffering from “famine and malnutrition,” with assistance organisations unable to reach the affected areas.
A curfew that was in place in the Ouest department, which encompasses Port-au-Prince, was extended on Sunday until Wednesday. The expiration date of the state of emergency is April 3.
Due to the situation, a number of nations, notably the US and EU member states, have withdrawn diplomatic staff from Haiti.
In the meantime, preparations are underway to form a security mission headed by Kenya to support the overburdened police force of the Caribbean island nation.
