SENATE ADOPTS RESOLUTION TO CONVENE NATIONAL SUMMIT OVER FARMERS/HERDERS CLASH
The Senate has passed a resolution that would direct the upper house to pass the required laws on the subject. The resolution calls for organising a national conference with farmers and stakeholders to discuss the conflict between farmers and herders regarding grazing.
This resolution was adopted in response to a motion on the necessity of rehabilitation for four communities in Kogi State’s Omala LGA that had been the target of gunman attacks and killings, sponsored by Senator Isah Jibrin under orders 41 and 51.
Senator Jibrin further revealed that attacks on these communities—Agojeju Odo, Ajokpachi Odo, Bagaji, and Bagana—have caused the wanton devastation of public and private properties valued at hundreds of millions of naira, in addition to the deaths of over 500 individuals.
In a contentious debate, some parliamentarians vehemently demanded the passage of legislation outlawing open grazing, while others voiced their disapproval of the military’s substantial reliance on the funding of some state governors for operational needs.
Sen. Adams Oshiomhole’s additional prayer, which called for the formation of an ad hoc committee to convene a summit to address pressing issues and put an end to ongoing conflicts that have become a national threat, was later endorsed by the upper house.
