SENATE PASSES BILL TO REPEAL NIMC ACT FOR SECOND READING
The Senate has approved a bill to repeal the National Identity Management Commission Act of 2007 on its second reading.
According to the bill, a National Identity Database would be established, and the National Identity Management Commission would be in charge of keeping the database up-to-date, registering people, and issuing identity credentials.
On June 5, the bill was first read, and on Tuesday, Senator Barau Jibrin, the Deputy Senate President, sponsored it.
Through extensive provisions created to update and improve the current provisions in accordance with international best practices, it aims to increase the effectiveness and inclusivity of the identity management system.
In a main discussion, the proposed legislation is described as essential to the nation’s socioeconomic and political development, national security, and an efficient identity management system.
Among other things, the bill’s goals are to protect individuals’ privacy and confidentiality by enacting strong data protection standards, simplifying the sharing of personal information, and promoting public trust in the way their information is handled.
