The University of Benin (UNIBEN) is slated to reopen on August 11 following a period of closure caused by student protests and agitations.

According to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), the institution’s Senate declared the school’s closure on July 4 in response to student protests over weeks of campus power outages.

According to a letter sent by the university’s registrar, Ademola Bobola, students are expected to return to their halls of residence on Sunday, with classes beginning on Monday.

The registrar stated that during the closure, university management addressed the difficulties that led to the institution’s closure, such as electricity and water supplies, as well as renovations to residence halls.

“The decision to reopen the university was made by the Senate at its meetings held on July 23 and 24, 2024, in tandem with the position of the Governing Council, critical stakeholders, and after a review of the current atmosphere in the country.

“As part of the conditions for resumption, each returning student is required to swear an affidavit of undertaking to be of good conduct while in the university.

“The affidavit must contain cardinal points, as captured in the document attached to the circular.

“Students are expected to upload the sworn affidavit on their Kofa page of the university and submit the hard copy to their departmental course adviser within two weeks of resumption,” he said.

Bobola noted that failing to comply with the directive may result in the withholding of defaulting students’ scores.

He told students that the appropriate steps had been taken to address the concerns that had led to the closure, and he was certain that normal academic activities would resume smoothly.

To prevent any consequences, the registrar recommended students keep track of the restart date and follow the resuming criteria.
