WE WILL GENERATE COMBINED 100M GALLONS PER DAY WATER CAPACITY SOON – LAGOS STATE GOVT
Lagos State is set to generate at least 100 million gallons of pipe-borne water daily from its main water plants once the pipe network installation is completed.
This announcement was made on Tuesday when the State Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, led a team on an official visit to the State Water Corporation’s Adiyan I and II waterworks.
Speaking to the press after the tour, during which he received updates from the consultants on Adiyan II and the management of the State Water Corporation, Wahab emphasized that the current administration is committed to ensuring the distribution of pipe-borne water across all regions of the state. He added that a key part of this goal is the ongoing installation of an 8.1-kilometer water pipe network aimed at serving specific communities in Lagos State.
He elaborated that Adiyan Water Works I is designed to supply 70 million gallons per day, Adiyan Water Works II will provide 11 million gallons daily, Iju Water Works will deliver 5 million gallons per day, and Ishashi Water Works will contribute 5 million gallons, totaling about 100 million gallons of water per day to serve Lagos. This significant project is being closely supervised by the Ministry, with its completion scheduled for the final quarter of 2027.
The Commissioner further noted that the project includes laying 8.1 kilometers of 1600mm diameter Ductile Iron (DI) pipes for raw water pumping within the extensive Adiyan premises.
According to him, “1,600 MM thick pipe have been laid to run for 8.1 KM and it is an ongoing project which the officials of the Ministry have come to inspect and are impressed with the level of work done; It is heartwarming to know that 100 Million gallons of water would be supplied from Iju, Adiyan I & II, Ishasi micro and mini water works soon”.
Wahab explained that this initiative would ensure that most homes in Lagos will soon have access to pipe-borne water, which is the goal of the current administration.
He highlighted that the tour was essential to assess the progress since the contractor’s mobilization, and added that the Governor would personally visit the site soon.
“This sector remains a focus of the Lagos State Government’s investment and development efforts. As such, the present administration is committed to achieving a water-safe city that guarantees access to clean water for all residents”, he said.
In response, Mr. Cifola Daniele, the Project Manager representing Salini Nigeria Limited, explained that the project involves constructing a water treatment plant capable of processing 320,000 cubic meters of water daily, meeting World Health Organization (WHO) standards.
He stated that the water treatment plant project will take 36 months to complete and is expected to eliminate the shortage of pipe-borne water in various Lagos communities.
The Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation, Engr. Muktar Tijani, commended the Commissioner and management for their active involvement in the corporation’s projects.
He assured that all concerns raised by the consultants during the tour had been addressed adequately by the Commissioner.
