MUTFWANG TELLS FG TO PREVENT STUDENT LOAN BENEFICIARIES FROM LEAVING NIGERIA
The federal government has been urged by Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang to enact policies that would stop students who receive student loans from leaving Nigeria after completing their studies.
When Mutfwang spoke in Jos and hosted Akintunde Sawyerr, Managing Director of the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND), he underlined the detrimental effects of brain drain, especially in the medical field.
He cautioned that, despite large public investments in their education, Nigeria is losing highly qualified medical personnel, creating a crisis in healthcare services.
The governor proposed legally enforceable contracts that would require recipients to serve in Nigeria for a certain amount of time before looking for chances outside.
In order to retain talented individuals, he also advocated for stronger incentives like competitive pay, chances for career advancement, and better working environment.
Mutfwang emphasized the necessity for a patriotic commitment to national development from individuals educated with public monies, given that 16,000 doctors are said to have left Nigeria in the last five years. The CEO of NELFUND, meanwhile, told the governor that President Bola Tinubu is dedicated to making education accessible to all Nigerian children.
