Gunmen kidnapped a 400-level student from the Federal University Birnin Kebbi (FUBK), Augustine Madubiya, during an early morning attack on Tuesday, which also resulted in the death of a local resident.

The incident took place around 3:00 a.m. at Istijaba Villa, an off-campus student hostel in the Unguwar Jeji area.

Eyewitnesses reported that five armed men confronted students who were sleeping outdoors due to the heat, demanding money. When the students responded that they had no money, the attackers became violent.

In the midst of the chaos, a local resident, Malam Siddi Hussaini, who was tending to his cattle nearby, tried to intervene but was shot and killed by the gunmen.

The attackers then abducted Augustine Madubiya, a final-year Economics student. Another student, Collaneous Steven, a 200-level Business Administration student, managed to escape.

Following the incident, the Vice Chancellor of FUBK, Professor Muhammad Zaiyan Umar, visited the scene with the Divisional Police Officer of Kalgo Division and officials from the Department of State Services (DSS).

He addressed the students, assuring them that the university remained committed to their safety.

Umar also notified Kebbi State Governor Nasir Idris of the incident through the Secretary to the State Government and the Director of Security Services at the Cabinet Office.

The university thanked the District Head of Unguwar Jeji and the local community members for their support and called for continued cooperation from the state government, Nigeria Police, and other security agencies to ensure the safe return of the abducted student and prevent future incidents.
