A female commercial driver in Lagos has reported being violently assaulted by a thug, known as an ‘Agbero,’ while trying to stop the theft of her car battery.

The incident occurred near the Oriental Hotel, where the suspect entered her vehicle, pretending to be a passenger headed to the Nigerian Law School.

The driver said she became suspicious when she saw the suspect attempting to steal her car battery through the rearview mirror.

He struck her violently when she confronted him, dragging her in public, assaulting her, and ripping her clothes.

In a video that went viral, the woman was shown sobbing and waving for assistance and justice, her face swollen.

The victim has called for action and justice against the ongoing harassment that Lagos’s female commercial drivers endure.

Speaking majorly in Yoruba, she said: “He started beating me when I asked him where he was taking my battery,” she sobbed in the video.

“Look at my face, look at what he did to me. He tore my clothes and battered me. Please, anyone watching this video, help me. Call human rights. Is this how a woman trying to survive should be treated?

“This man must be brought to justice. Let him be an example. I won’t leave him until I get justice. I’m doing a daily job just to survive. Is being a female commercial driver in Lagos a crime?”
