Panic erupted on Wednesday afternoon near the Testing Ground area of Osogbo, Osun State, after a man plunged into a swollen river along the East Bypass road.
Eyewitnesses reported that the man, whose identity remains unknown, had been seen loitering in the vicinity since Saturday, raising concerns about his mental health. According to Dorcas Taiwo, a shop owner near the scene, the man approached the bridge and suddenly jumped into the river, prompting a swift response from nearby residents.
“It happened before noon. I noticed him walking toward the bridge and immediately raised an alarm. Some passersby jumped into the river and pulled him out,” Taiwo said. She added that the man was found without clothing at the time of the rescue.
Emergency responders from the Osun State and Federal Fire Services arrived shortly after the rescue had been carried out by volunteers. Adekunle Ibrahim, spokesperson for the Osun State Fire Service, confirmed the incident, describing it as a joint response effort. “He was brought out before we arrived and was handed over to members of the community. He was rescued alive,” he said.
The rescued man was later laid beside the road as concerned residents took charge of the situation. Authorities are yet to provide further information on his condition or identity.
