A High Court sitting in Awka, Anambra State, has sentenced a 44-year-old woman, Goodness Daniel, to five years imprisonment for trafficking in persons, with an option of a ₦2 million fine.

Presiding over the case, Justice Peace Otti found the defendant guilty of human trafficking, specifically the buying and selling of human beings, in violation of Section 21 of the Trafficking in Persons (Prohibition) Enforcement and Administration Act, 2015.

The judgment, delivered on June 27, 2025, follows a case brought against Daniel by the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP), Anambra State Command. She was initially arraigned on July 9, 2024.

In addition to the prison sentence or fine, the court also ordered Daniel to pay ₦2.6 million in restitution to the victim, who also testified as a prosecution witness.

NAPTIP hailed the conviction as a major step forward in its commitment to combat human trafficking and protect the rights and dignity of victims across the country.
