The management of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, has ordered students to proceed on a three-week mid-semester break.

The decision followed Tuesday’s student protest over a newly introduced transportation system on campus.

According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju, the directive was approved by the University Senate with immediate effect.

The statement explained that the break became necessary after the protest escalated into what it described as unruly behaviour, including the blockage of major roads and alleged harassment of motorists within and around the campus.

It added that despite efforts by the university management to engage the students and restore calm, the situation raised serious concerns about the safety of both the university community and the public.

“Following recent developments on campus, the Senate of the University has approved that the students proceed on a mid-semester break for a period of three weeks with immediate effect,” the statement read.

As part of the directive, students have been instructed to vacate their hostels immediately.

The university said the break would allow for the restoration of order and create room for dialogue with relevant stakeholders to address the issues raised.

It also stated that management would continue consultations during the period to ensure normal academic activities resume smoothly.

Parents and guardians were advised to take note of the development and make appropriate arrangements for their wards, while students were urged to remain peaceful and use the break responsibly.
