The Muslim Rights Concern (MURIC) has thrown its weight behind the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) in its push for the passage of the Unexplained Wealth Bill by the National Assembly.
In a statement issued on Saturday by its Executive Director, Professor Ishaq Akintola, the Islamic human rights group called on lawmakers to urgently pass the bill, describing it as a powerful tool to combat corruption and enforce transparency in both public and private sectors.
According to Akintola, “This is not only a call in the right direction but also a call to action. So many kleptomaniacs, yahoo yahoo boys, kidnappers, armed robbers, etc., escape detection due to the absence of this particular law.”
MURIC noted that the existing anti-corruption laws are too weak to compel accountability, and argued that the passage of the Unexplained Wealth Bill would significantly strengthen the legal framework against illicit wealth acquisition.
“The bill will make probity and accountability mandatory with little effort on the part of the law enforcement agencies,” the statement added.
MURIC concluded by urging the National Assembly to heed the EFCC chairman’s call and pass the bill to save the country from what it described as “the abyss of moral debauchery.”
“We therefore call on the NASS to rescue the nation from the abyss of moral debauchery by hearkening to the call of the EFCC chairman to pass the unexplained wealth bill into law.”
The Unexplained Wealth Bill, if passed, would empower law enforcement agencies to investigate and confiscate assets whose sources cannot be legally justified.
