The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has secured the conviction of three internet fraudsters arrested at a hotel within the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library (OOPL) complex in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

Justice Dehinde Dipeolu, sitting as a vacation judge at the Federal High Court in Lagos, on Monday delivered judgment after the defendants pleaded guilty to separate cybercrime charges.

The convicts are Adewale Adewole Adenekan, Oyatokun Damilola Qudus, and Adisa Okikiade.

Adenekan admitted to the offence, confirming that he had already restituted the sum of N200,000. An iPhone 14 Pro Max tendered by the EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Yobo, was admitted as an exhibit. Justice Dipeolu subsequently sentenced him to one month imprisonment with an option of a N300,000 fine.

Similarly, Oyatokun Damilola Qudus, who was also charged with impersonation, was sentenced to one month imprisonment with an option of a N300,000 fine.

Adisa Okikiade, who faced a separate one-count charge, also pleaded guilty and was convicted, with the court granting him the option of a fine.

The charges against the convicts detailed how they fraudulently impersonated foreigners on various online platforms, including Google and Instagram, with intent to unlawfully obtain financial advantage, in contravention of Section 22 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, Etc.) Act, 2015.

The EFCC reiterated its commitment to curbing cybercrime across the country and warned young Nigerians against engaging in fraudulent online activities.
