The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of its Cross River State Commander, Chief Narcotics Officer Ogbonna Uzoma.
The agency’s Director of Media and Advocacy, Femi Babafemi, confirmed the development in a statement on Friday, saying the late commander was discovered lifeless in his hotel room in Calabar on Thursday after he failed to show up for scheduled engagements.
“CN Ogbonna had been up and doing at his new Command and was billed to lead his officers on some scheduled engagements at 10am on Thursday. But when his officers didn’t hear from him by 9am, they went to his hotel room with hotel staff. After repeated knocks and unanswered calls, a staff member had to enter through the ceiling to open the door, where they found the commander’s lifeless body,” Babafemi said.m

The state police were immediately alerted, with the Commissioner of Police visiting the scene. Investigations into the cause of death are ongoing.
NDLEA Chairman, Brig. Gen. Buba Marwa (retd.), directed the Zonal Commander for Zone 14, ACGN Mathew Ewah, to relocate to Calabar to support the inquiry. He commiserated with the family, noting:
“The Agency stands with the family in this trying moment, and we pray that God will comfort them and grant the departed eternal rest.”
Uzoma assumed office in Cross River on August 18, 2025, and was described as proactive in his duties. Despite his short tenure, he had already begun engaging his officers in operational planning.
Cross River has in recent years been a focal point of NDLEA operations, with the destruction of a 30-hectare cannabis farm and major drug seizures recorded earlier in 2025.
