The Lagos State Police Command has recorded a major breakthrough in crime detection with the arrest of a notorious armed robbery kingpin, hired assassin, and murderer, John Samuel, 28, from Akwa Ibom State.

Operatives of the Command tracked and apprehended the suspect on September 19, 2025, at about 2:00 p.m. in his hideout in Epe. Samuel, an ex-convict who was released from prison on August 18, 2025, returned swiftly to violent crime. Barely weeks after regaining freedom, he launched a deadly attack at Gbajobi Street, Allen Avenue, Ikeja, where he shot and wounded a businessman, Gbenga Obama, before robbing him of a gold necklace and other valuables.

The brazen attack, captured by CCTV footage, showed Samuel firing at the victim with an English pistol while his accomplice waited on a motorcycle for a quick escape. The victim, who sustained serious gunshot wounds, has since been treated and discharged from hospital.

During interrogation, Samuel confessed to selling the stolen jewelry for ₦4 million far below its actual value. The Police Command has intensified efforts to apprehend other members of his gang, with plans to prosecute them upon completion of investigations.

Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohudare Jimoh, commended the gallantry of operatives in tracking down the suspect, describing the arrest as a major victory in the fight against violent crime. He assured Lagos residents of their safety, warning criminal elements that Lagos offers no hiding place for lawbreakers.

DSP Babasuyi B. Oluseyi, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer, confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on behalf of the Commissioner of Police on Saturday, September 20, 2025.
