The Kano State Police Command has arrested a 33-year-old man, Nasiru Shitu, for allegedly impersonating a police officer and extorting members of the public.

Shitu, a resident of Kofar Waika Quarters, Kano, was apprehended around 5 p.m. on Sunday at Kofar Dawanau, an area where several cases of extortion by fake policemen had been reported.

Police spokesperson, Abdullahi Haruna, confirmed the arrest in a statement on Tuesday, noting that preliminary investigation revealed the suspect is neither a police officer nor a member of the Police Special Constabulary but an impostor using a police uniform to defraud unsuspecting residents.

Haruna added that the suspect will be charged to court after further investigations to determine the extent of his activities and possible accomplices.

The Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Bakori, urged residents with useful information about the suspect or similar incidents to contact the Command through its emergency number: 07038188127.

He assured the public that the Command remains committed to proactive measures aimed at safeguarding lives and property, stressing that all criminal impostors will be brought to justice.
