A violent attack by suspected Fulani herdsmen on Friday has left one person dead in Onoli, Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community, Awgu Local Government Area of Enugu State, sparking fear and anger among residents.
The victim, identified as 30-year-old Onuchukwu Ogbaki, was reportedly attacked while checking his farmland along the Enugu–Port Harcourt Highway near the Enugu–Abia border. He was rushed to the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital, Enugu, where he died around 2 a.m. on Saturday.
A family member of the deceased, Sampson Okolie, confirmed the incident, alleging that Fulani herdsmen had previously driven many farmers away from their farmlands in the area.
“It is true Fulani herdsmen killed our brother,” Okolie said. “They have sacked our people from their farms, and only a few were still going there. Now, even those few are scared for their lives.”
He added that Obuovia village, a neighboring settlement in the Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community, had already been deserted due to repeated attacks. “Obuovia village has been completely sacked from their farms. The herdsmen now occupy those farmlands,” he stated.
Confirming the incident, the President General of Ugwuleshi Autonomous Community, Mr. Aaron Chidi Osu, said the matter had been officially reported to the Enugu State Police Command.
“It is no longer news that Fulani herdsmen have been attacking my community,” Osu said. “Our people are living in fear because they can’t go to their farms anymore. We are calling on the state government to intervene urgently to stop these constant attacks.”
The latest assault has heightened tension in the area, with residents demanding immediate government action to safeguard lives and property.
Efforts to reach the Enugu State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Daniel Ndukwe, for comment were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages at the time of filing this report.
