PROTEST TENSION: POLICE STATION OPERATIVES AT LEKKI, OJOTA, OTHER HOTSPOTS
The Lagos State Police Command has assured inhabitants that the region remains secure and tranquil despite reports of demonstrations in various areas of the nation.
The state’s Commissioner of Police, Mr. Olohundare Jimoh, provided this reassurance while addressing the media during the Show of Force conducted by the command on Monday in Ikeja.
Jimoh articulated that the initiative was part of the ongoing efforts to instill confidence in residents regarding their safety and to showcase the command’s preparedness to uphold peace and order throughout the state.
He elaborated that tactical deployments had been established at all significant locations where demonstrations had previously taken place, including the Lekki Toll Gate, Ojota, Maryland, Gani Fawehinmi Park, and other pivotal zones within the metropolis.
“We want residents to understand that they are secure and can conduct their lawful activities without apprehension.
“We have executed appropriate deployments to all recognizable venues where demonstrators have congregated in the past,” the police chief stated.
He mentioned that the “Show of Force” was targeted at deterring troublemakers and ensuring that no factions disturb public tranquility under the pretense of demonstrations.
“Protests are permissible globally, but when individuals take the law into their own hands and disrupt public order, it ceases to be a protest.
“We will not permit any individual to encroach upon the rights of others who are engaged in their daily pursuits,” he cautioned.
The Commissioner further indicated that police units across Lagos had been instructed to submit situation reports every 15 minutes to facilitate real-time monitoring of occurrences.
He confirmed that up to this point, there have been no reports of unrest, traffic disruption, or assaults in any part of the state, noting that areas such as Ojota, Maryland, and Lekki remain serene, with officers maintaining a visible presence.
“Lagos is secure, peaceful, and devoid of any form of protest. We will persist in patrolling and observing all areas to uphold the peace that residents are currently experiencing,” he assured.
The media previously reported a confrontation between security forces and the FreeNnamdiKanuNow demonstrators today, following an incident where security personnel deployed tear gas to disperse protestors demanding the release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra.
The nationwide campaign for the immediate and unconditional release of the IPOB leader is organized by human rights activist Omoyele Sowore and has received endorsement from opposition parties.
Kanu is currently detained on charges including terrorism, treason, and incitement, among others.
The Federal Government contends that he has advocated for Biafra’s independence through contentious means, including provocative rhetoric on social media and Radio Biafra.
