Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has refuted claims that the recent killing of five police officers in Darazo Local Government Area was a result of a bandit attack.

The Bauchi State Police Command had earlier reported that the officers were ambushed by suspected bandits in Sabon Sara village while responding to a distress call. The command’s spokesperson, Ahmed Wakil, said the personnel were attacked by armed men believed to be bandits.

However, speaking at the opening of the State Executive Council meeting on Wednesday, Governor Mohammed dismissed the report, stating that the incident was related to local community issues, not banditry.

“We had an incident in Darazo reported as banditry. But I want to tell you that it is not banditry; it is a community issue. We are on the ground, we know it, and we will handle it very well,” he said.

The governor clarified that while the state had temporarily closed schools as a proactive measure against possible student abductions based on security agencies’ intelligence the Darazo case should not be linked to broader bandit-related insecurity.

“Because of security reasons, I will not divulge all the information. But our investors should be assured that what happened in Darazo is not banditry,” Mohammed added.

He noted that although he serves as the state’s chief security officer, security agencies often have access to deeper intelligence. The decision to close schools, he said, was aimed at preventing potential attacks similar to those recorded in other states.

“It’s not to create fear but to be safe and secure. It’s better than going with ego. We will make sure we do as much as we can to secure vulnerable and hard-to-reach schools, including fencing them before the end of the year.”

Governor Mohammed further revealed that the recruitment of vigilantes in the state would run concurrently with the implementation of the Safe School Programme as directed by the Office of the National Security Adviser.

“At least, we will do our own part and leave the rest to our Creator, Allah (SWA),” he said.

The governor assured residents and stakeholders that the state government is committed to safeguarding lives and securing educational institutions across Bauchi.
