The Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two individuals and intercepted two vehicles transporting a combined 1,046 kilograms of cannabis sativa along the Benin–Akure Road.
In a statement issued on Thursday, the state commander, Mitchell Ofoyeju, said the arrests were made on November 13 during a motorised patrol by NDLEA operatives.
“The NDLEA Edo State Command has intercepted two vehicles loaded with cannabis sativa during a patrol along the Benin–Akure Road. Both vehicles were believed to have departed from Uyere community in Ovia North-East LGA, heading towards Benin City,” Ofoyeju stated.
The first vehicle, a Mercedes-Benz V-Boot with registration number DE311BEN, was intercepted at Ugbogiobo community and found to be carrying 38 bags of dried cannabis weighing 494kg. The driver, 45-year-old Felix Edah from Delta State, was arrested and taken into custody.
The second suspect, identified as 51-year-old Lucky Abagha, was apprehended while driving another Mercedes-Benz V-Boot (registration number JJJ 56 JW). His vehicle contained 46 bags of cannabis weighing 552kg.
Both vehicles were seized as instruments of crime, and the suspects have been detained for further investigation.
“These arrests form part of our ongoing efforts to tackle drug-related crimes and dismantle trafficking networks operating within Edo State, particularly as we approach the yuletide season,” the commander said.
He urged residents to report suspicious drug-related activities, stressing that combating narcotics was a shared responsibility.
Meanwhile, the agency disclosed it recently destroyed nine cannabis farms in the state. Ofoyeju added that discussions were ongoing between the Edo State Government and NDLEA to curb cannabis cultivation and promote sustainable agricultural practices.
