LAGOS GOVT EXPLAINS WASTE BUILD-UP, ANNOUNCES MEASURES TO IMPROVE REFUSE EVACUATION
By Aishat Momoh. O.

The Lagos State Government has addressed growing concerns over waste accumulation in parts of the state, attributing the situation to ongoing changes in waste disposal logistics and outlining measures being taken to restore efficiency.
In a statement, the government explained that the decommissioning of the Olusosun landfill has necessitated the redirection of waste previously disposed of at the site to alternative facilities in Epe and Badagry. According to the government, the development has increased travel distances and turnaround times for some Private Sector Participation (PSP) operators, resulting in temporary pressure on the waste evacuation system.
To mitigate the impact, the state government said the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has been directed to provide immediate intervention in areas where PSP operators are overwhelmed. LAWMA is currently carrying out evacuation exercises, particularly at identified waste “black spots” across the state.
The government also disclosed that discussions are ongoing on the procurement and deployment of additional waste trucks to strengthen LAWMA’s operational capacity, improve response times, and ensure more efficient refuse evacuation.
In addition to operational interventions, the state announced the establishment of a dedicated task force to combat illegal roadside dumping and indiscriminate waste disposal, which it said is often driven by unauthorised roadside trading. The task force will conduct 24-hour surveillance and enforcement operations, with full authority to apply environmental laws without exception.
The government appealed to residents to support the cleanup efforts by disposing of waste responsibly, especially during celebrations, holidays and community events, and by patronising only approved PSP operators.
While acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the current challenges, the Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to building a cleaner, more orderly and sustainable city, assuring residents that the issues are being addressed through deliberate and targeted measures.
Residents were urged to continue partnering with the government by adhering to proper waste disposal practices, as the state works towards restoring cleanliness and improving environmental health across Lagos.
