Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday received Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun, at the Lagos House, Ikeja, as part of traditional rites leading to the Eyọ Festival 2025.

The visit featured the Ijade Ọpa procession, led by the Ọkọlaba and the Bajulu of Lagos, in line with age-long customs observed ahead of the annual cultural celebration.

Governor Sanwo-Olu said the procession forms part of the traditional rites preceding the Adamu Orisa Play, the central event of the Eyọ Festival, scheduled to hold on December 27, 2025, at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS), Lagos.

Describing the Eyọ Festival as one of Lagos State’s most significant cultural heritage events, the governor noted that it remains a powerful symbol of identity, continuity and unity among the people of Lagos.

“The Eyọ Festival remains one of our most important cultural expressions, connecting generations and preserving the traditions that define who we are as a people,” Sanwo-Olu said.

He reaffirmed the commitment of his administration to the preservation and promotion of indigenous culture, stressing that such festivals play a vital role in strengthening social cohesion and showcasing Lagos’ rich heritage to the world.

The Eyọ Festival, also known as the Adamu Orisa Play, attracts thousands of cultural enthusiasts, tourists and indigenes from within and outside Nigeria each year, reinforcing Lagos’ status as a major cultural and tourism destination.
