Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, and his wife, Layal, have been conferred with chieftaincy titles in Lagos State, marking another recognition of their contributions to cultural and social development.
Seyi Tinubu was installed as the Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun, while his wife received a complementary chieftaincy title during a traditional ceremony held in Lagos.
Congratulating the couple, Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, described the honour as a reflection of service, character and commitment to the culture and people of Lagos State.
“I warmly congratulate Barrister Oluwaseyi Tinubu on his installation as the Okanlòmo of Eyọ Ọba Alakẹtẹ Pupa, Laba Ẹkun. This honour reflects service, character and commitment to our culture and people,” the governor said in a statement on Friday.
Sanwo-Olu further wished the President’s son strength and clarity as he assumes the responsibilities and expectations associated with the traditional title.
The Lagos installation came barely five days after the couple received prestigious chieftaincy honours from the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Owoade.
On December 21, 2025, Seyi and Layal Tinubu were installed as the Okanlomo of Yorubaland and Yeye Okanlomo of Yorubaland respectively at a colourful ceremony held at the Alaafin’s palace in Oyo town.
The Oyo ceremony attracted several high-profile dignitaries, including Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives Benjamin Kalu, ministers, state governors, traditional rulers from Nigeria and the Republic of Benin, as well as other senior government officials.
The title “Okanlomo of Yorubaland,” which translates to “the beloved child,” symbolises a custodian of Yoruba values, unity and cultural heritage.
While conferring the title, the Alaafin described Seyi Tinubu as a young leader committed to youth empowerment, social development and the promotion of Yoruba values.
In his acceptance speech at the Oyo ceremony, Seyi Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Alaafin and pledged to continue supporting initiatives focused on youth development, unity and the preservation of Yoruba culture.
“I accept this title with humility and a deep sense of responsibility to serve our people and promote peace and progress across Yorubaland,” he said.
