Gunmen on Monday launched a deadly attack on Gebbe community in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State, leaving several residents feared dead and many others injured.

Local sources said the assailants invaded the community without warning, firing sporadically and triggering widespread panic as residents fled their homes for safety in neighbouring villages and nearby bushes.

The attack, described by locals as one of the worst in the area in many years, left the community traumatised and largely deserted. “The community is in shock. We have not witnessed this level of violence in a long time,” a resident said.

As of press time, the exact number of casualties could not be confirmed, as many residents scattered during the attack, making immediate assessment difficult.

Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said security operatives had been deployed to the area to assess the situation and restore calm.

“We have been informed of the attack, and the command has deployed a tactical team to the area to get the real information of what happened and the number of victims. A detailed statement will be issued in due course,” Usman said.

Residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, confirmed the presence of security agencies in the community, while calling on the state government and relevant authorities to urgently intervene to prevent further attacks.

Efforts to obtain comments from the village head were unsuccessful, as calls to his phone were not answered at the time of filing this report.
