President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has approved the appointment of Rotimi Oyedepo, SAN, as the new Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) in the Federal Ministry of Justice.
The appointment was confirmed in a letter dated December 23, signed by Omolabake Mafe on behalf of the Chairman of the Federal Civil Service Commission, which approved Oyedepo’s transfer from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to the mainstream Federal Civil Service in the public interest.
According to a statement issued on Tuesday by the Director of Information and Public Relations at the State House, Abiodun Oladunjoye, Oyedepo will take over from the outgoing DPP, Abubakar Babadoko, who is scheduled to retire on December 31, 2025, after completing the mandatory eight-year tenure as a director.
The statement noted that Oyedepo is a 2007 Law graduate of the University of Ilorin and was called to the Nigerian Bar after attending the Nigerian Law School in 2008.
It added that the new DPP is expected to leverage his extensive prosecutorial experience to strengthen the Federal Government’s legal framework, reduce dependence on external legal counsel for high-profile cases, and ensure greater consistency and coordination in government prosecutions.
Before his appointment, Oyedepo spent over 15 years at the EFCC, where he specialised in the prosecution of complex economic and financial crimes and served as Head of the Commission’s Monitoring Unit.
He was also a key member of the Federal Government’s legal team in the landmark Process and Industrial Development (P&ID) arbitration case against Nigeria.
Oyedepo’s professional achievements include being named EFCC Outstanding Staff of the Year in 2014 and Best Financial Crimes Prosecutor in 2019, recognitions that underscore his reputation as one of the country’s leading prosecutors.
