President Bola Tinubu has asked the Senate to approve far-reaching judicial reforms aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s justice system through an increase in the number of judges across key courts.

At the resumption of plenary on Tuesday, Senate President Godswill Akpabio read a letter from the President requesting an amendment to the Court of Appeal Act to raise the number of justices from 70 to 110. Tinubu said the proposed increase was necessary to enhance the court’s capacity and address the rising volume of cases.

The President also transmitted a bill seeking to amend the Federal High Court Act to increase the number of judges from the current 70 to 90, an expansion from the original provision of 50 judges. He urged the Senate to give the proposed amendments accelerated consideration.

Both legislative proposals were subsequently referred to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business for further action.

In the same correspondence, President Tinubu requested Senate confirmation of the appointment of Justice Oyewole Joseph Kayode as a Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The Senate also received a Court of Appeal Amendment Bill proposing the establishment of an Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) Centre to enable the settlement of suitable cases outside the conventional court process. This bill was likewise referred to the Committee on Rules and Business.

Additionally, the President forwarded a separate request seeking amendments to 24 health sector bills, aimed at addressing concerns over what he described as over-bloated board memberships in the sector.
