A former member of the National Assembly who represented Oyo Central Senatorial District and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Ayoade Adeseun, has urged the Federal Government to establish a military base in Ogbomoso, citing escalating insecurity and the area’s strategic significance.

Adeseun made the appeal on Sunday during an interview with The Media in Onipanu, Surulere Local Government Area of Oyo State.

He described the absence of a military formation in Ogbomoso as a serious security lapse that, according to him, should have been addressed long ago.

The call follows a recent attack in Oyo State, where gunmen suspected to be bandits reportedly invaded the Old Oyo National Park in Oloka, Oriire Local Government Area, killing five National Park Service officers on Tuesday, January 6, 2026, at about 11:30 p.m.

Four farmers were also reportedly killed in Igboho, Oorelope Local Government Area of Oyo State, while the abduction of a nursing mother and her child in Supare/Ajegunle, Akoko South Local Government Area of Ondo State, has further heightened fears across some South-West communities.

Adeseun noted that Ogbomoso and surrounding areas have produced many distinguished military officers over the years, arguing that this legacy should ordinarily warrant the establishment of a military base in the area.

“It is a very serious issue and one that should have been addressed long ago. We have many of our sons serving in the military, particularly in the Army, Navy and Air Force,” he said.

Recalling notable military figures from the area, Adeseun mentioned the late Brigadier General Benjamin Adekunle, the late Colonel Adeniyan, and Ibrahim Taiwo.

He added that Ogbomoso continues to have strong representation within the Armed Forces, describing the absence of a military formation in the town as deeply concerning.

According to him, even a limited military presence would be preferable, noting that depending on troops deployed from Ibadan or the battalion in Saki, Oke-Ogun, could result in dangerous delays in the event of security emergencies.

Adeseun warned that although Ibadan is relatively close, relying on reinforcements from the city or from the battalion in Saki, Oke-Ogun, could prove inadequate in emergency situations.

He noted that the distance between Saki and Ogbomoso is about three hours, stressing that any delay in response could allow security situations to escalate before help arrives.

The APC chieftain therefore called for the immediate establishment of at least a military outpost with combat capability in the area, insisting that a permanent security presence, even if not a full military base, is necessary to address the growing security challenges.

Adeseun said the closest military presence to Ogbomoso is an educational command in Ilorin, Kwara State, which he noted does not have a combat mandate.

According to him, the lack of a combat-ready formation in the area remains a major concern, stressing the need for a unit capable of responding swiftly to security threats.

He also raised concerns about Ogbomoso’s proximity to international borders, warning that unchecked migration could pose additional security risks.

Adeseun cited recent killings in Ikoyi-Ile, Oloka village, as further justification for proactive security measures, rather than deploying troops only after attacks have occurred.

He therefore urged the Federal Government to urgently establish a military presence in the area, adding that sufficient land is available to accommodate a military facility.
