NDUME RAISES CONCERN OVER EXCLUSIVE INDICTMENT OF KWANKWASO IN US BILL

Ali Ndume, representing Borno South, has questioned why United States lawmakers singled out former New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP) presidential candidate Rabiu Kwankwaso in a proposed bill, saying the move appears suspicious.
Ndume made the remarks on Friday while speaking to the media, where he expressed surprise that Kwankwaso’s name was included and said he would like clarification on how the former Kano State governor became implicated.
According to reports, US lawmakers recently introduced the Nigeria Religious Freedom and Accountability Act of 2026, a bill aimed at strengthening accountability for human rights violations in Nigeria. The proposed legislation reportedly includes provisions for possible sanctions against certain groups, including Fulani militias, as well as Rabiu Kwankwaso.
Reacting to the development, Ndume said the bill has passed first reading in both chambers of the US Congress but is not yet publicly available in full. He noted that he has been trying to obtain a copy to better understand its contents before making a comprehensive comment.
“In the summary, I understand the bill is recommending sanctions, visa bans, and possible asset seizures,” he said. “But for them to mention Kwankwaso, I think something may be fishy somewhere. However, there is nothing to worry about if someone is truly clean.”
