At least 17 people were killed on Tuesday when a Myanmar military air strike hit a village market in the country’s westernmost Rakhine State, according to local sources.

Myanmar has been engulfed in civil war since the military seized power in a 2021 coup, triggering widespread fighting between the junta and a coalition of ethnic armed groups and pro-democracy forces.

The armed opposition group, Arakan Army, said 17 “innocent civilians” were killed in the strike on Yoe Ngu village market. Meanwhile, the civilian volunteer group, Ponnagyun Youths Association, put the death toll at 18.

A spokesperson for the Myanmar military was not immediately available for comment.

PYA chairman Pyae Phyo Naing, who visited the site after the strike, described extensive destruction.

“The scene was really bad, four or five buildings were burnt down and many buildings were destroyed,” he said.

“Some people were crying while many dead bodies were scattered over the area. Some people were running away from the scene as there were also houses still burning when we arrived,” he added.

The reported strike underscores the intensifying violence in Rakhine State, where clashes between the military and the Arakan Army have escalated in recent months.
