Benfica announced on Friday that five of its supporters have been provisionally suspended for allegedly making racist remarks during the club’s Champions League first-leg defeat to Real Madrid earlier this month.

The February 17 match was overshadowed by alleged racial abuse directed at Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni, prompting a roughly 10-minute stoppage in play. Vinicius had scored the winning goal for Madrid in the fixture.

Following Wednesday’s 3-1 aggregate victory, Madrid advanced to the last 16 of the competition.

In a statement, Benfica said, “The club has suspended five members and revoked their red passes as disciplinary proceedings are underway, which could result in the maximum sanction under our statutes—expulsion.”

The statement added, “Benfica reaffirms that it does not tolerate any form of discrimination or racism and will continue to act decisively against behaviors that undermine the values of the club, sport, and society.”
