TROOPS RECOVER 257 RUSTLED LIVESTOCK IN KANO

Troops of the Joint Task Force in Gwarzo, led by personnel of the Nigerian Army 3 Brigade, have thwarted an attempted cattle rustling operation in Kano State, successfully recovering 257 livestock.
The operation was carried out following a distress alert received in the early hours of Sunday, at about 6:57 a.m., indicating that suspected bandits had rustled cattle from Mainika village in Gwarzo Local Government Area.
In a statement issued on Monday, the Assistant Director, Army Public Relations, 3 Brigade, Babatunde Zubairu, said the troops responded swiftly to the alert by deploying to a suspected bandit route, where they ambushed the fleeing rustlers at Dayi village.
He explained that in the early hours of March 1, 2026, at about 6:57 a.m., Joint Task Force troops, acting on a distress call, moved quickly to the identified route and successfully ambushed and engaged a group of armed bandits at Dayi village, who had earlier rustled cattle from Mainika village.
The statement added that upon sighting the Joint Task Force troops, the bandits fled in disarray towards Katsina State, specifically the Malumfashi Local Government Area, abandoning the rustled livestock, all of which were successfully recovered by the troops.
The recovered animals included 135 cows, 119 sheep, one goat and two donkeys, bringing the total number of livestock to 257.
According to the statement, the recovered livestock comprising 135 cows, 119 sheep, one goat and two donkeys have since been handed over to their rightful owners through the appropriate local authorities.
The Army said the bandits sustained heavy casualties during the encounter.
“The bandits suffered heavy casualties during the engagement,” the statement noted.
The Joint Task Force in Gwarzo comprises personnel drawn from the Nigerian Army 3 Brigade, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, as well as local vigilante groups.
The Commander, 3 Brigade Nigerian Army, Ahmad Tukur, commended the troops for their bravery, gallantry and vigilance, noting that their morale and fighting spirit remain high.
He also expressed appreciation to members of the local community for their continued support and timely provision of intelligence, which he said contributed significantly to the success of the operation.
According to the statement, the situation in the area remains under control, with sustained surveillance ongoing to forestall further incidents. It added that the task force has been directed to intensify security operations to ensure the continued safety of lives and property.
