The Federal Capital Territory Internal Revenue Service (FCT-IRS) has urged all taxable residents to submit their 2025 personal income tax returns before March 31, 2026.
The filing requirement applies to employees, elected and appointed public office holders, self-employed individuals, business owners, professionals, and workers in the informal sector.
In a statement issued by Mustapha Sumaila, Head of Corporate Communications at FCT-IRS, the service stressed that all residents must declare their total income from all sources, including deductions and other required information. Filing can be completed online via the FCT-IRS self-service portal (www.taxporta.fctirs.gov.ng) or at any FCT-IRS office.
The directive aligns with Section 24(f) of the 1999 Constitution, Sections 13 and 14(3) of the Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, Section 24 of the FCT-IRS Act 2015, and Paragraph 11 of the 2026 Personal Income Tax Guidelines.
The FCT-IRS warned that failure to comply may result in penalties, interest, best-of-judgment assessments, and other civil or criminal sanctions.
Acting Executive Chairman Michael Ango highlighted the importance of voluntary compliance, noting that timely registration, filing, and payment of taxes supports the provision of security, infrastructure, education, health, and other critical services in the FCT.
The Federal Government began enforcing the new tax regime on January 1, 2026, with the introduction of four key laws: the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act 2025, and the Joint Revenue Board Establishment Act 2025.
