Members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria, popularly known as Shi’ites, on Tuesday staged a peaceful protest in Potiskum and Nguru Local Government Areas of Yobe State, condemning the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, whom they described as a revered Iranian Supreme Leader.

The demonstrators marched through sections of the towns, waving Iranian flags and displaying large portraits of Khamenei.

They chanted slogans expressing solidarity with Iran and opposition to what they described as foreign interference that led to the death of their spiritual figure.

In Potiskum, leaders of the Shi’ite community said the protest was organised to denounce what they described as the unjust killing of a prominent Islamic figure.

The group’s leader in Potiskum, Abdullahi Hassan, told journalists that the demonstration was meant to reject the circumstances surrounding Khomeini’s death.

“We are here to protest the killing of Ayatollah Ali Khameini. This is an attack on the dignity of Muslims globally, and no right-thinking person should accept it,” he said.

Hassan added that the movement would continue to raise its voice against actions it believes undermine the sovereignty of nations and harm the Islamic world.

In Nguru, other members of the movement expressed similar concerns, describing the killing of Khameini as “a blatant violation of international norms” that should be condemned by the global community.

“We mourn the loss of our leader and call on all peace-loving nations to condemn this act,” one of the protest organisers said.

The peaceful protest in Yobe comes amid a wave of demonstrations by Shi’ite groups in parts of Nigeria over recent developments involving Iran’s leadership and international military actions.

Recall that Iranian state media confirmed Khamenei’s death on Saturday during a large-scale U.S.-Israeli operation against targets in Iran.

The strikes, which began on or around February 28, 2026, have escalated into ongoing military exchanges, with reports of significant casualties, retaliatory actions by Iran, and regional instability.

The Islamic Republic on Sunday announced 40 days of national mourning in honour of Khamenei, who ruled the Middle East nation for nearly four decades.
