JUSTICE MUST NOT BE SELECTIVE- ADC DEMANDS TRANSPERACY IN EL-RUFAI’ MALAMI CASES

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has expressed concern over the handling of ongoing legal cases involving two of its leaders, Abubakar Malami and Nasir El-Rufai, insisting that justice must not be applied selectively.
In a statement on Tuesday, Bolaji Abdullahi, the ADC national publicity secretary, said the party has been monitoring developments surrounding the cases of Malami, a former attorney-general of the federation (AGF) and minister of justice, and el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna state.
In recent weeks, the two ADC chieftains have come under scrutiny over allegations involving criminal charges, keeping them in and out of detention facilities in Abuja, the nation’s capital.
Last Friday, Malami, along with his wife, Asabe Bashir, and his son, Abdulaziz, appeared before the federal high court in Abuja. They were charged with 16 counts related to conspiracy, helping to hide money, disguising, concealing, and laundering the proceeds of illegal activities, which totalled approximately N8,713,923,759.49.
The accused denied the charges, but the court decided to send them to prison while their bail applications are being reviewed.
The court ordered Malami and Abdulaziz to stay in Kuje prison in Abuja, while Asabe was to be held in Suleja prison in Niger State, as it has facilities for female inmates.
The case has been postponed until March 6.
Similarly, El-Rufai came under legal scrutiny starting on February 13, 2026, after he spoke on media that he had secretly recorded a conversation with Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser, and heard him say he had ordered his arrest. El-Rufai admitted that what he did was against the law, but he said the government often does things like this without getting permission from a court.
The previous governor was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) after staying two nights at the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
On February 18, the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC) also said that el-Rufai was in their custody due to ongoing investigations, and the commission‘s officers raided his home in Abuja the next day.
