The Nigerian government has unveiled a new tax collection system aimed at bringing more small businesses into the tax net.

According to a statement released Wednesday via the Finance Ministry’s X account, the policy—titled ‘Presumptive Tax Framework’—is designed to simplify tax compliance for traders, artisans, and other micro-enterprises.

Commenting on the new system, the Executive Secretary of the Joint Revenue Board (JRB), Mr. Olusegun Adesokan, emphasized that it prohibits tax officials from using roadblocks to collect levies.

“It also bans the setting up of roadblocks for tax collection,” he added.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister Wale Edun explained that the presumptive tax framework is intended to create a simple and fair system for small businesses.

“The aim of presumptive taxation is not to burden small businesses, but to offer a fair, straightforward, and predictable method for tax compliance. Our fiscal approach focuses on broadening the tax base rather than raising tax rates. Inclusion is key to sustainability,” the minister said during the scheme’s inauguration on Tuesday in Abuja.
