The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has voiced concern over escalating tensions along the borders of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, calling on the countries involved to exercise restraint and resolve their disputes through peaceful dialogue.

In a statement released on Friday, the regional bloc said it is closely monitoring the situation and has decided to send a technical assessment mission to evaluate developments in the disputed Yenga area.

The Commission explained that the move comes amid growing concerns over tensions between Guinea and Sierra Leone in the historically sensitive Yenga border region, which has long been affected by territorial disagreements.

ECOWAS also highlighted that recent incidents along the Lofa County border between Guinea and Liberia have added further complexity, prompting an expansion of the assessment mission’s geographic scope.

The expanded mission aims to provide a comprehensive evaluation of current and potential points of friction within the Mano River Basin, a region historically marked by both cross-border tensions and cooperation among the three neighbouring states.

“The ECOWAS Commission is deploying a technical assessment mission to evaluate the situation between Guinea and Sierra Leone in the Yenga border area,” the statement said.

The Commission added that it has begun diplomatic engagements with the affected countries to gather information and help ease tensions in the region.

ECOWAS urged all parties to exercise maximum restraint, de-escalate tensions immediately, and respect internationally recognised boundaries. The bloc also called on governments to avoid unilateral actions that could undermine bilateral relations and to prioritise dialogue through ECOWAS-facilitated channels.

The regional body reaffirmed its commitment to working closely with the authorities of the affected countries to promote cooperation and ensure lasting peace and stability across the Mano River Basin.

According to ECOWAS, the organisation remains dedicated to fostering mutual respect, dialogue, and peaceful coexistence among member states for the benefit of all citizens in West Africa.
