Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, joined top dignitaries in Uyo, the capital of Akwa Ibom, for the 2026 International Women’s Day celebration hosted by Helen Eno-Obareki, the state First Lady and daughter of the governor.

Held under the global theme, “Rights, Justice and Action for All Women and Girls,” the event drew over 5,000 attendees and included the commissioning of a modern Senior Citizens Centre in Ikono Local Government Area.

The centre, named in honour of the First Lady and commissioned by her, was initially conceptualised by the late wife of the governor, Patience. Oluremi Tinubu praised Governor Eno for bringing the vision to fruition, describing the project as a meaningful investment in the welfare, dignity, and quality of life of senior citizens.

The facility, designed to offer healthcare, recreational, and social support services, also complements the state government’s welfare scheme for the elderly. Governor Eno noted that approximately 600 senior citizens currently receive a monthly stipend of N50,000 to support their wellbeing.

Addressing the gathering, Tinubu described the International Women’s Day theme as a call to action to improve the lives of women and girls nationwide. She encouraged women to become catalysts for change in their communities:

“When women lead with purpose, the entire nation feels the impact.”

The event also celebrated women’s contributions to national development, with commendations from Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Governor Eno, both highlighting the vital role women play in strengthening families and society.

Notable attendees included Chioma Uzodimma, Claudiana Ibijoke Sanwo-Olu, the spouses of several other governors, political figures, and representatives from women’s organizations. The celebration showcased lively cultural displays, vibrant attire, and performances by various age groups, highlighting the resilience, unity, and impact of women throughout Akwa Ibom.
