The Bauchi State Government has evacuated 64 University of Jos students in the wake of recent violence in the Angwan Rukuba area of Jos, Plateau State.
The move follows unrest that reportedly claimed around 27 lives, raising serious concerns about the safety of students in the area.
State Commissioner for Higher Education, Hadiza Kango, confirmed the evacuation on Friday while receiving the students at the Government House in Bauchi.
She explained that the operation was carried out after receiving an urgent alert from Mohammed Suleiman, President of the National Union of Bauchi State Students, who reported that the students were trapped in their hostels.
She said, “My attention was drawn to the situation by the NUBASS President, Mohammed Suleiman. Immediately, he alerted me, I took action, and the government responded swiftly with full support and cooperation to rescue the students.”
Kango added that officials ensured the safe return of the students before handing them over to their parents and guardians.

“Education is very important. Their status as students informed our quick intervention. I am glad they stayed together, avoided trouble, and did not participate in the crisis. That shows responsibility. They should maintain this conduct and remain committed to their studies,” she added.
Speaking further, student leader Mohammed Abdulwahab confirmed that buses and security personnel were mobilized to evacuate the affected students back to Bauchi.
He praised the state government for its swift response to the crisis.
The recent violence in Plateau has intensified security concerns in Jos, impacting both residents and local institutions.
