The Benue State Government has begun evacuating its indigenes studying at the University of Jos in Plateau State.
The evacuation was approved by the university’s management following the Palm Sunday attack in Angwan Rukuba, which reportedly claimed around 28 lives.
Reports indicate that 600 students were evacuated on Thursday, with additional students wishing to return to Benue expected to be evacuated over the weekend.
The development was confirmed in a statement on Friday by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Kula Tersoo, who noted that the evacuation of Benue indigenes from the University of Jos commenced on Thursday.
The statement read in part, “Following the recent attack on Angwan Rukuba and surrounding areas, which claimed lives and triggered widespread tension in Jos, Plateau State, Governor Hyacinth Alia, on Thursday, April 2, 2026, commenced evacuation of students of Benue origin, studying at the University of Jos, back to Benue State.”
According to the statement, the evacuation of the students was necessary to safeguard the lives and welfare of the people, especially the future leaders studying far from home.
“Already, over 600 students of Benue origin have been successfully evacuated back home with another batch of buses deployed to Jos, to help evacuate the remaining set of students and other indigenes of the state willing to return home, given the current tension in the capital city,” the statement further read.

Alia, however, reassured residents of the state that their security and welfare would remain his top priority.
He added that discussions were ongoing with his Plateau State counterpart, Caleb Mutfwang, as the government continues to work diligently to bring the perpetrators to justice and restore normalcy.
It is recalled that following the Angwan Rukuba attack, the University of Jos management postponed first-semester examinations and authorized the immediate evacuation of all students from hostels and other student accommodations, effective Thursday, April 2, 2026.
